Travel Day
Upon your arrival in Quito, the capital of Ecuador, you’ll find that most flights tend to land in the late evening. As you disembark, our attentive driver will be waiting for you at the airport, ready to escort you to our cozy Tambocajas B&B Basecamp. Relax and unwind as we prepare you for the adventure ahead!
City Tour of Quito – Equator Monument
Today, we will immerse ourselves in the rich history and vibrant culture of Colonial Quito. Our adventure begins at El Panecillo, home to an impressive sculpture of Quito’s Madonna. Here, we’ll take in the awe-inspiring 360-degree views of the surrounding glaciated peaks, creating the perfect backdrop for unforgettable photographs. Next, we’ll stroll through the enchanting old town of Quito, a UNESCO World Heritage site. As we wander its beautifully preserved streets, we’ll admire the stunning colonial architecture that tells the story of this historic city. We will set off from Baños early in the morning, riding on the excitement of a new adventure. Our journey takes us to the quaint village of Urbina, where we’ll begin our trek into the stunning Abraspungo Valley. Surrounded by the majestic peaks of Chimborazo and Carihuairazo, we’ll be accompanied by the gentle presence of llamas and vicuñas that roam the open fields. As we ascend toward the pass at 4,200 meters (13,780 feet), the breathtaking views of the Andean landscape unfold before us, creating a truly unforgettable experience. Chimborazo Trek – Chimborazo Refuge – Cuatro Esquinas
We rise early in the morning to begin our descent from the Carrel Refuge (4,800 m), making our way toward the base of Chimborazo. Our first stop is the magnificent Machay Temple (4,700 m), a natural rock formation resembling an ancient temple that offers breathtaking panoramic views of the surrounding landscape. The sights here are truly awe-inspiring, providing a perfect backdrop for memorable photographs. From Machay, we continue our descent to the Quishuar Lone Tree (4,154 m), a remarkable and iconic solitary tree that stands defiantly in this rugged terrain, a symbol of resilience amidst the harsh and beautiful landscape. Its unique presence adds to the charm of the region and serves as a fantastic spot for a moment of reflection. As we progress, we descend further toward the Cuatro Esquinas Community (3,338 m), navigating through a fascinating array of landscapes that showcase diverse vegetation zones. Altar Trek
After a hearty breakfast, we will embark on our journey from Baños to the charming Andean village of Releche. Nestled at around 3,000 meters above sea level, this quaint village serves as our starting point. Once we arrive, we’ll prepare our backpacks and make sure we have all our gear ready for the adventure ahead. Our trek today will take approximately 5 to 6 hours as we make our way to our Refuge at an elevation of 3,800 meters. As we traverse the rugged terrain, the breathtaking beauty of the Andean landscape will surround us, culminating in spectacular views of the jagged Altar massif a striking feature that dominates the horizon. Upon reaching our Refuge in Collanes, we’ll settle in and take a moment to soak in the awe-inspiring scenery. As the sun sets, casting golden hues over the mountains, we will share a delicious dinner, reflecting on the day’s journey and marveling at the power of nature surrounding us. After an enriching day, we’ll retire for the night, ready for the adventures that await us tomorrow.

As we ascend, prepare to be captivated by the breathtaking vistas that unfold before us. From this vantage point, you’ll be treated to spectacular views of the peaks of Chimborazo, Sangay, and the Cubillines, all dramatically set against the Andean sky a sight sure to leave you in awe. After soaking in the beauty of the landscape, we’ll descend to the tranquil shores of Mandur Lagoon, where we’ll take a well-deserved break to enjoy a packed lunch amidst nature’s serene surroundings. In the afternoon, we’ll begin our journey back to the mountain hut, where we can reflect on the day’s adventures and marvel at the striking beauty of the region. With another incredible day behind us, we’ll settle in for the night, ready to rest and recharge for the next leg of our journey.

Altar Trek – Laguna Amarilla – Releche

The hike, which takes approximately 2 to 3 hours, will lead us through some of the most stunning landscapes in the region. As we make our way to the lagoon, prepare to be mesmerized by the breathtaking views of the glacier-covered walls of the Altar massif. With a bit of luck, we may even catch sight of majestic condors soaring gracefully along the mountain cliffs, adding a touch of magic to our journey. We’ll traverse various vegetation zones, showcasing the remarkable biodiversity of the area. Starting from forests filled with Polylepis, Quishuar, and Laurel de Cera trees, we will transition into the unique steppe and moor landscapes typical of the Andes. After taking in the beauty of the Yellow Lagoon, we will retrace our steps back along the ascent path. Once we return to Hacienda Releche, we’ll regroup and prepare for our journey back to Baños. From here, we will head to the Hola Vida Ecological Reserve, an incredible sanctuary brimming with diverse flora and fauna. Once at the reserve, we’ll have the opportunity to learn about the various plants and their medicinal properties, giving us insight into the healing traditions of the local communities. Our knowledgeable guides will share fascinating stories about the uses of these plants in traditional medicine. Next, we’ll embark on a scenic hike to the captivating Hola Vida Waterfall. As we trek through the dense jungle, we will be surrounded by the symphony of nature—exotic birds, the rustling of leaves, and the rhythmic flow of water guiding our path. Upon our arrival at the waterfall, we’ll take a moment to bask in its beauty before enjoying a delicious lunch at a nearby hut, prepared with fresh and local ingredients. The first leg of our hike will take approximately three hours as we make our way toward the Rock of Three Crosses, the highest point of our trek. At the summit, we’ll be rewarded with stunning panoramic views of the picturesque Culebrillas Lagoon, a sight that is sure to take your breath away. Take a moment to soak in the beauty of the surrounding landscape, as this is a perfect opportunity for some memorable photographs.
